Definition of density
Density is mass per unit volume, with the formula rho = m / V. The international unit is kilograms per cubic meter (kg/m3), but labs more often use grams per cubic centimeter (g/cm3).
Key conversions
1 g/cm3 = 1000 kg/m3 = 1 g/mL = 1 kg/L. These four expressions are numerically identical, just different unit combinations.

Practical use
Knowing density lets you convert between mass and volume. For example, a steel plate 20cm by 10cm by 5cm has a volume of 1000 cm3 and, at 7.85 g/cm3, a mass of about 7.85 kg. Shipping quotes, material purchasing, and structural self-weight calculations all rely on this relationship.
