📖 Deep Dive: Frequency Converter

What frequency means

Frequency is the number of times a periodic event repeats per unit time. The international unit is the hertz (Hz), one per second. It is named after German physicist Heinrich Hertz, who discovered electromagnetic waves.

Common magnitudes

  • Human hearing range: 20 Hz to 20 kHz.
  • Mains frequency: 50 Hz in China and Europe, 60 Hz in the US and parts of Japan.
  • AM radio: about 530-1700 kHz.
  • FM radio: 88-108 MHz.
  • Wi-Fi: 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.
  • CPU clock: modern processors are generally 3-5 GHz.
  • Rotation and frequency

Mechanics often use revolutions per minute (RPM). The conversion is simple: Hz = RPM divided by 60. A 1500 RPM motor runs at 25 Hz, which is also the basis of variable-frequency drive speed control.

    A conversion example

An audio sample rate of 44.1 kHz means 44100 samples per second. By the Nyquist theorem it can fully reproduce sounds up to 22.05 kHz, just covering the upper limit of human hearing.
