📖 Deep Dive: Running Pace Calculator

What pace means

Pace is the time to run each kilometer, usually written as minutes:seconds per km. It is more intuitive than speed (km/h): seeing 5:30 tells you each km takes 5 minutes 30 seconds.

How the three relate

Pace = total time divided by distance; total time = pace times distance; distance = total time divided by pace. Knowing any two gives the third - that is the core logic of this tool.

Common race distances

At a 6:00 per km pace: 5 km about 30 minutes, 10 km about 1 hour, half marathon (21.0975km) about 2 hours 7 minutes, full marathon (42.195km) about 4 hours 13 minutes.

Pace zones in training

  • Easy run: can talk normally, 70%-80% of total training volume.
  • Tempo run: a bit hard but holdable for 20-40 minutes.
  • Interval run: near max, repeated in short bursts.
  • Always running fast is the most common amateur mistake and a major source of injury.

    Reminder

This tool assumes a steady pace; actual results depend on terrain, weather, nutrition, and pacing. Use it with your own context.
