Why so many pressure units

The international unit of pressure is the pascal (Pa), defined as one newton of force per square meter. But because pascals are so small in everyday numbers, engineering, medicine, and meteorology each developed more convenient units, which is why so many coexist today.

Common unit reference

  • 1 bar = 100,000 Pa = 100 kPa
  • 1 psi = 6,894.76 Pa
  • 1 atm = 101,325 Pa = 760 mmHg
  • 1 MPa = 1,000,000 Pa (common in hydraulic systems)

    • Usage by field

  • Car tire pressure: Europe uses bar, the US uses psi, China mixes both.
  • Medical blood pressure: mmHg (millimeters of mercury) worldwide, e.g. 120/80.
  • Weather pressure: hectopascals (hPa); standard sea level is 1013.25 hPa.
  • Hydraulic engineering: mostly MPa.

    • A conversion example

    A tire marked 2.4 bar converts to psi: 2.4 times 14.5038 is about 34.8 psi. So inflating to 35 psi basically meets the spec.
