The calculation method

First the tiling area: length times width. Then the effective footprint of one tile including grout: (tile length + grout) times (tile width + grout). Tiles needed = tiling area divided by single-tile footprint times (1 + waste rate).

An example

Bathroom floor 2.5m by 1.8m = 4.5 sqm, with 30cm by 30cm tiles and 2mm grout: footprint 0.302 by 0.302 is about 0.0912 sqm, theoretically 49.3 tiles; with 10% waste about 55 tiles. If 11 tiles per box, buy 5 boxes.

Why grout matters

Tiles expand and contract with temperature and need room to move; fully groutless tiling can buckle and crack when temperatures change. Standard wall tile grout 1-2mm, floor tile 2-3mm, rustic tile 3-5mm.

Practical notes

Note the batch number and buy from the same batch to avoid color differences.

Keep 2-3 whole tiles as spares for future breakage.

Odd-shaped areas (pipes, thresholds) need extra.
